Are metal sheets and  tapping screws contaminated? Are clients complaining about you?

Here’s some useful tips to give them!

What is the right material for the laminate and tapping screws?

inoxmare_tapping_screwsTell your clients to be very careful with combination of materials to be used.

These are some precaution to prevent the screws contamination:

  • What not to do. Using stainless steel tapping screws on coated zinc sheet or sheet iron.
  • What to do. Before proceeding to screw in, makes pilot-hole on steel sheet always.

The stainless steelmechanical resistance: the fall of a myth.

Costumers often think that the stainless steel mechanical resistance is always superior than zinc coated or iron. Well, it’s not necessary true. Indeed, that depends on the screw’s specific resistance concerned and the material of which be made.

For example:

  • The stainless steel tapping screws, with grade A2 and A4, resistance class of 50-70-80, have a breaking load 500 to 800 N/mm²
  • The not stainless steel tapping screws, with resistance class 8.8-9.8-10.9-12.9, go up to 1200 N/mm².

Therefore, it’s logical to conclude that drilling a sheet zinc with a stainless steel tapping screw  it’s not correct. Although the pilot-hole.

The oxidation resistance: stainless steel is unbeatable.

Indeed, the stainless steel is preferable to iron and iron coated with zinc, in terms ofinoxmare_steel_sheet oxidation resistance.

Especially in the presence of a highly oxidant environment, such as marine.

So, the best solution is to choose the AISI 316 stainless steel  with A4 grade. This is rich in molybdenum and more resilient to oxide.
